::: GlooNet Basics
What do I need to run GlooNet?
The basic requirements are simply a computer with music or photos and an always-on broadband connection to the Internet. Then from any web-enabled device, you can access you personal music collection.
What are the GlooNet software requirements?
Since the GlooNet software is written in Java, it can run on any device capable of running J2SE 1.1.7 Virtual Machine (or greater). You can download Java for free from Sun Microsystems, or you can test your computer to see if Java is already installed. The GlooNet software have been tested on Windows 98/Me/NT/2000/XP, Macintosh OS X, and Linux. The computer running GlooNet must be connected to the Internet using a broadband connection, such as DSL or cable modem.
Is the GlooNet software a windows only product?
No. Both Windows and Macintosh release are available and a Linux distribution is available on request.
How do I connect to GlooNet?
Start by creating a GlooNet account and download the GlooNet software. Once you have installed the GlooNet software, configure it to recognize your music collection, and then from the Connection Manager window, type in your GlooNet username and password and click the Connect button. If you are running the GlooNet software on multiple computers, you only need to connect to the GlooNet service from one of them.
Can I run the GlooNet software on multiple computers simultaneously?
Yes. The GlooNet software can be installed on any number of networked PCs or other devices that contains media files you'd like to access through GlooNet. Once the software is installed and configured on the selected computers, start the media servers and connect to GlooNet from each of them.
Can I use GlooNet to share my photos with friends and family?
Yes. GlooNet will allow you to share individual images or photo folders with others without having to upload images to any online photo service. Configure and start the GlooNet Photo Server and log into your GlooNet Account. Navigate into your Photo collection and click on the "Share This Folder" or "Share This Photo" links to share your photos with friends and family.
What media management software do I need to use?
The GlooNet software is media management software independent. You can use iTunes or any other content management system of your choice. The GlooNet software sits alongside your existing music management application, so that you are not tied to one content management solution. Configure the software to recognize your music folder or there is a special interface for users of iTunes that will support your iTunes collect, playlists, and smart playlists.
Which audio formats does GlooNet support?
The GlooNet software will support playback of any MP3 and WAV audio files. Support for additional file types and DRM content will be available in future releases of the software.
Which image formats does GlooNet support?
The GlooNet software will support GIF and JPG image files. Support for additional file types will be available in future releases of the software.
Which devices does GlooNet support?
Your GlooNet account can be accessed from any device that has an Internet browser. In order to play the audio content, the device must have an audio player that is configured to work with the browser. Here are some suggestions for various platforms:
Desktop Computer (i.e. Windows, Mac) -- iTunes, Winamp, Windows Media Player
Palm Powered PDAs and Phones (i.e. Treo) -- Pocket Tunes Deluxe
PocketPC Powered PDAs (i.e. iPaq) -- Pocket Player, GSPlayer, TodayPlayer, Windows Mobile Media Player
Any audio player that is capable of playing Internet audio streams (such as Shoutcast or Live365) and can be configured to launch from the browser, is capable of playing audio via GlooNet. If your hardware platform is not listed above, search for a player with the mentioned capabilities, and if you find one that works, let us know.
Does the GlooNet software read ID3 tags?
Yes. Your music libraries can be navigated by Album, Artist, Artist/Album, and Genre.
Does the GlooNet software support playlists?
Yes. The GlooNet service is capable of playing .M3U, .PLS and iTunes playlists.
Why do I need to verify my email address?
In order to activate sharing with your email address, you must verify that you are in fact the owner of that email address. This is done by sending a email with a verification link that will confirm you as the account holder. You can view the verification status of your email or add additional email addresses here.
What does the "Add to Friends" checkbox do?
When adding members to a group, you can click the Add to Friends checkbox and the individual will also be added to your Friends list. If you don't click Add to Friends, the individual will not be listed in your address book unless you click the Show All Address link. This allows you to add members to a group, such as all the parents of a soccer team, without cluttering your address book.
Can I configure GlooNet to find content on a network drive?
Since GlooNet is set up as a service under Windows, you need to have a user account with a password for the GlooNet services to be able to access the network drive. GlooNet runs under the local system account which doesn't have access to NFS by default.
Here's what you need to do to give the GlooNet services the right permissions:
- Go to Start > Control Panel > User Accounts
- Set a password for current account or create a new account with username and password
- Go to Start > Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services
- Find the GlooNet Audio and Photo services
- Right click and open Properties
- Click the Log On tab and select "This Account" option
- Type the username and password for the account set up above
- Click OK and repeat for the other GlooNet service
- From the GlooNet Desktop, click "Add Folder..." and make sure to add the path starting from My Network Places (UNC name) and not by selecting the mapped drive letter
Is there anything I need to know when upgrading my GlooNet software?
In most instances you can install the upgrade directly over the previous installation (if not, the installer will ask you to uninstall the previous installation). Note: If you delete the previous installation folder or install into a new directory, the photo shares that you have established with others will no longer work.
::: GlooNet Troubleshooting
Are there detailed step-by-step configuration instructions?
Yes. Click here to view detailed instructions.
When I try to extract the .sit file or launch the .pkg file I get an error.
There are some incompatibilities between various versions of Stuffit that will cause the extraction to fail. You may see "An error occurred during the Stuff operation" error when extracting or an "Open Failed" error when opening the .pkg file. Upgrade to the latest version of Stuffit to see if the problem is resolved. If the problem persists, send us information about the version of Stuffit you are running along with your system information using the Contact Us form.
The media server won't start.
First, try clicking the Start button again if you haven't already done so. If it won't start after repeated attempts, it may be a Java problem. For GlooNet to function properly, you must have Java installed. Make sure that Java Virtual Machine version 1.4 or greater is installed . To check your Java version or to upgrade, go to http://www.java.com/. If you have multiple versions of Java installed, that is known to cause Java problems (if you have upgraded to v1.5, you must uninstall the previous version). In some cases, reinstalling Java can fix the problem. If the problem persists, paste the contents of your wrapper.log file (located in c:\program files\gloonet\audio server\bin) along with your system information into the Contact Us form.
When I try to launch the GlooNet Server, the application doesn't open.
The GlooNet software may already be running. Double click on the GlooNet tray icon (
) to open the GlooNet Desktop configuration window.
I can't connect to GlooNet from the Connection Manager.
First, make sure that you have an active Internet connection from your computer. Next, make sure that you are using the correct username and password that you created when you registered for GlooNet. If you are running Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger), read more here. For GlooNet to function properly, you must have Java installed. Make sure that you have installed Java Virtual Machine version 1.4 or greater. To check your Java version or to upgrade, go to http://www.java.com/. If the problem persists, paste the contents of your gateway.log and wrapper.log files (located in c:\program files\gloonet\gateway) along with your system information into the Contact Us form.
I can't connect to GlooNet from my Mac and get a "The command exited with a non-zero status" error.
Apple made some changes to Tiger and are not compatible with the GlooNet software user interface. The result is that the Start/Stop and Connect/Disconnect buttons do not function properly. We are working to resolve this issue. In the meantime, you can manually start and stop the GlooNet components from the command line. For example, use the following commands to start the GlooNet components:
"/Applications/GlooNet/Audio_Server/bin/AudioLibrary start"
After I start the GlooNet Photo or Audio Servers, my processor spikes to near 100%.
When you start up the GlooNet servers, the service needs to load all the song and photo information into the system. Depending on the size of your collection, this can take anywhere from 30 sec. to 5 minutes. If you log into your GlooNet account and select one of your collections, it will indicate where it is in the loading process. In the case of the Photo Server, high processor utilization may continue after loading has completed. The first time you start the photo server or after you add new photos to your collection, GlooNet will generate the necessary thumbnail images that allow your to easily navigate your collection. If the processor utilization does not drop down to normal levels when you stop the GlooNet Servers, contact GlooNet Support with details, as there may be some other issue.
After I log in, GlooNet takes me back to the login page again.
First, make sure that your browser is configured to accept cookies. Click here to see if any cookies are being set (if the window comes up empty, cookies are not being set properly). Cookies must be enabled for GlooNet to function properly. If you have cookies enabled, and you are still being sent back to the login page, try reloading the page. It may be that your browser has cached the login page and isn't properly displaying the post-login page. If that doesn't resolve the problem, delete your browser cache and cookies (on the Treo Blazer browser, go to Options > Preferences > Advanced > Memory Management) and then try logging into GlooNet. If you still have problems, there is a secondary method of deleting your cookie file which is described at PalmOne Support. There is a known problem with some Treo 600 devices where they will not store any cookies since the cookie file has not been initialized properly (if you don't find "Web Cookies" as described in PalmOne Support, you may be in this situation). Unfortunately, the only way to resolve this problem is to perform a hard reset of your device which will erase all data and require a re-sync to restore your data.
How to perform a Hard Reset:
- Find the reset button on the handheld device. On these handhelds it is located in a hole on the back panel.
- Get the reset tool located in your stylus or another object with a small, blunt end.
- Hold down the power button (Wireless Mode button on the Treo 600) and press the reset button inside the hole on the back panel of your handheld.
- When the Palm Computing Platform screen appears, release the power button.
- You will get a message warning you that you are about to erase all of your data. To continue, press the top scroll button. To cancel, press any other button. Canceling will perform a soft reset and the data will remain intact.
- You will have to calibrate the digitizer and verify the time and date.
I can log into my GlooNet account, but it doesn't find any audio or photo servers.
First, confirm that you have configured the software properly to recognize your music or photo collection and that you have clicked the Start button to active the media server. If the Media Server is running properly, see if you have firewall software running. Temporarily disable it and see if that resolves the problem. If so, you will need to configure the firewall software to allow GlooNet to function. Many Mac G4 and Windows XP computers have a built-in firewall that may be active by default. On the Mac, open System Preferences & click the Sharing icon. On the Sharing window, click the Firewall button and set the Firewall to OFF. In Windows, go to your Control Panel and open Security Center. If you are running Norton Internet Security (which includes Personal Firewall) or McAfee Personal Firewall, you will need to grant java.exe and wrapper.exe full privileges.
I can log into my GlooNet account and I see my content, but I can't navigate into it.
The Windows XP firewall may be blocking you ability to communicate with other computers on your network. If you are running Windows XP SP1, we recommend that you upgrade to SP2. If you don't want to upgrade, you will need to configure GlooNet for a static port and then configure the Windows Firewall to allow GlooNet communication on that port. First, click GlooNet Audio Server or GlooNet Photo Server to bring up the main Server control panel. Click the Advanced button and check the Static Port check box (generally the static port should be between 1024 and 65,535). Restart the media server. Next, open the Network Connections window and select Properties for your active network connection. Click the Advanced tab, followed by the Settings button. Click Add and enter "GlooNet TCP" as the service name, "localhost" as the name or IP address, the static port you selected in your GlooNet configuration as the internal and external port, and select the TCP option. Click OK to save the entry. Click Add again and enter "GlooNet UDP" as the service name, "239.255.8.15" as the IP address, "2131" as the internal and external port, and select the UDP option. You should now be able to view and navigate your collection.
What if I have Norton or McAfee Personal Firewall installed on my PC?
After you install the GlooNet software, start the media server and log into to GlooNet Service from the application using your username and password. If you are running Norton Internet Security (which includes Personal Firewall), it will pop up a window stating that "A remote system is attempting to access [filename] on your computer." Allow access to both java.exe and wrapper.exe when the messages pop up. If you are running McAfee Personal Firewall, it will pop up a window stating that an "Application wants to access the Internet". Grant full access to java.exe and wrapper.exe. You may need to restart your Audio Server and/or reconnect to GlooNet for the service to function properly.
Pocket Tunes looks like it's playing, but I don't hear anything.
Check your phone settings and make sure that you don't have it set to mute.
Pocket Tunes keeps playing the same song over again.
Older version of Pocket Tunes (before v3.06) had a bug where M3U playlists didn't automatically advance to the next song. A bug still exists with PLS playlists, where Pocket Tunes will auto-advance, but the Previous and Next buttons do not function properly. To switch playlist formats, click the Settings link at the bottom of the page when you are logged into your GlooNet account.
The end of the song gets clipped when I play using Pocket Tunes.
This bug has been fixed in versions 3.06 or greater. Update your version of Pocket Tunes if you experience this problem.
iTunes doesn't seem to work properly when I use it as my player.
When you launch or open a playlist with iTunes from a browser, iTunes will automatically add the songs into the main Library rather than creating a new playlist. Playlist song order is lost and in some instances, playback won't advance to the next song automatically. Unfortunately, that is how iTunes is designed to function and there is no configuration to change this behavior. As a work around, rather than letting iTunes download the playlist, you can save the playlist file to your local drive, and then import it into iTunes from the File > Import menu option (make sure to change to "Files of Type" to M3U). This is create a new playlist with all the information maintained as it should.
I have multiple network cards or interfaces configured on my computer, which is causing problems.
From the GlooNet Audio Server, GlooNet Photo Server and Connection Manager windows, you can click on the Advanced... button to access network interface configuration options. Select the appropriate network interface through which GlooNet should connect.
When I log into my GlooNet account I get a "Missing Gateway" error.
Before you log into your GlooNet account from a browser, make sure that you have connected to the GlooNet service from the GlooNet software. To establish a connection to GlooNet, click on Connection Manager from the GlooNet Software and type in your GlooNet username and password. Click the Connect button and confirm that the status becomes "Connected". Reload your browser or re-log into your GlooNet account.
When I log into my GlooNet account I get a "No Session" or "No Permission" error.
Try clearing your cookies and see if that resolves the problem. If your browser does not support cookies, has cookies disabled, or has a corrupt cookie file, you may get this error. You must use a browser that supports cookies and it must be enabled for GlooNet to function properly. Try logging into GlooNet from a PC (if you are getting this error from a handheld) and see if you get the same error. If not, then your setup is correct. If so, then there is a problem with your cookie file or how your device handles cookies. Read more about how to reset cookies here. If the problem persists, please Contact Us and let us know which device you are using.
Why don't my settings seem to be saved?
If your browser has cookies enabled, then your settings should be save. Note that the setting preferences are not global, which allows you to configure your preferences independently for each device that is accessing GlooNet.
Can I run the GlooNet Connection Manager from one computer and run the Audio or Photo Server from another computer?
Yes. Ideally, you want to run the GlooNet Connection Manager from a computer that will be on most often, and then you can run the Audio and Photo Servers on one or more additional computers with media content.
Do I need to run the GlooNet Audio Server if I use Music management software that already has a uPnP server built into it (such as MusicMatch)?
No. But, you will still need to install the GlooNet software to establish a connection to GlooNet from one of your computers. The GlooNet platform supports uPnP AV servers so the GlooNet software will automatically discover and recognize any uPnP servers running on your network.
I'm trying to share with someone, but they never got the notification email
Some Internet Service Providers, such as AOL, have implemented restrictions that block or delay share notification and account verification emails. In most cases they will arrive with some delay. We are working to improve this situation as much as we can.
